Dairy Farming

Status and Market Trends:

A daily farm which started as a pilot project and subsequently privatized has been producing fresh milk and flavoured fresh milk to partly supply the local market in Brunei Darussalam. Production fluctuates dramatically for the past decade , 98,700 litres in 1995, 100,060 litres in 1999 and 63,409 litres in 2005 The demand for these products is expected to increase in time along with awareness and promotional program. The local daily stocks are imported initially from Australia (Holstein Friesian heifers) and much later the AFS. Brunei Darussalam welcomes potential investors to establish modern daily farm and milk processing plant, not only to serve the growing domestic demand but also for export market.

OPPORTUNITY : Dairy Farming

MARKET SETTING AND TRENDS: Variou s typ es of products are produced in small qu antit y such as fresh flavoured milk, yog hurt and ice-cream. Local fresh milk production co ntributes 17% of the total requirem ent. At the mome nt , there is only one dairy farm in Brune i Darussalam.

REMARKS:There are opportunities to establish and develop dairy farm (cattle and goat) in Brunei Darussalam with great feature in expanding and develop rich market for dairy products.

SUPPORT FACILITIES

The government policies have been supportive towards investment in agriculture and agro-based food products. The Department of Agriculture will be in-hand to provide assistant to potential investors in areas that includes: • Leasing of semi-developed land and industrial site at a reasonable minimum rate for a mutually agreeable period. • Provision of basic infrastructures (access road , drainage, irrigation, portable water and electricity). • Application on Special Tax breaks for declared pioneer industries and products. • Assistance from the Department of Agriculture and a host of other support facilities. • The proposed agro-technology park aim to conduct scientific work and biotech innovation and commercial operation may serve as knowledge-based service provider.
