Status and Market Trends: For a developing country like Brunei, with small labour force , modern farming technology such as combining automation and mechanization is vital for the country's agriculture and agribusiness industry development, However, the provision of high-technology equipment and materials to support the industry is lacking as most of the materials are fabricated outside the country. In Brunei Darussalam , the use of small tillage machines and equipment in crops farming is always imported, and often expensive . This also happens in the case of promoting the processing sector activities where most of the processing equipment has to be imported. For example, the close house production system for poultry and the establishment ofhydroponics system requires system maintenance . The producersin these industries have to outsource the materials or equipment for mainte nance , hence this is time consuming and slow in adopting the new system. The Department of Agriculture is now looking for potential investors in this industry to enhance the development of agriculture and agribusiness, hence making Brunei Darussalam as one of the high-technology based agricultural equipment producers. OPPORTUNITY : Manufacturing of high technology equipment and materials for agro-based activities - production of equipment, materials and machine for poultry close house system, hydroponics structure and system, small size farm machineries, agro-food processing equipment and accessories . MARKET SETTING AND TRENDS: Good potential but needs further study to cater both domestic and international markets. REMARKS:There are opportunities to establish a manufacturing plant particularly to complement the heavy industries or construction sectors. SUPPORT FACILITIES The government policies have been supportive towards investment in agriculture and agro-based food products. The Department of Agriculture will be in-hand to provide assistant to potential investors in areas that includes: • Leasing of semi-developed land and industrial site at a reasonable minimum rate for a mutually agreeable period. • Provision of basic infrastructures (access road , drainage, irrigation, portable water and electricity). • Application on Special Tax breaks for declared pioneer industries and products. • Assistance from the Department of Agriculture and a host of other support facilities. • The proposed agro-technology park aim to conduct scientific work and biotech innovation and commercial operation may serve as knowledge-based service provider.
