Status and Market Trends: Brunei's agricultural sector is now moving towards promoting agribusiness. Such initiative is in line with the high demand of participating SMEs in the agro-food industries . To enhance these industries, there is high demand for improvising the food packaging materials for those who are already or intend to engage in this sector. As Brunei Darussalam is steering towards agro-based food production , there is a need for supporting industries in the area of food packaging. Currently, locally prepared food products are presented in the traditional way of packaging for example ; plastic-transparent containers, recycled bottles, glasses, plastics, polystyrene and/or papers. These materials are available in the market or sometimes imported from neighbouring countries which come in standard design form, resulting in higher costs and sometimes seem unsuitable and old-fashioned . In the globally competitive market , the nature of high quality products is always measured by its innovative product designs and equally complimenting packaging materials . Some how this is not always the case in the area of food marketing. These two important characteristics are a challenge in Brunei agro-based product sector. To serve the agro-food industry, the Department of Agriculture is now encouraging the establishment of support industry in the manufacturing of food packaging and designs to ensure that the local agro-based products are able to penetrate and fulfill international market standards OPPORTUNITY : Food packaging and Designs manufacturing - various prototypes container like materials such as tetra pack, bottles (glass & plastic) , cans, paper & cardboard pack, flexible films pack, etc. MARKET SETTING AND TRENDS: There are about 200 SMEs actively involved in the agro-food processing indu stries producing various types of agro-based food products. The demand for food packaging and designs is considerably high to support these industries. A vital study to identify packaging materials and designs is required for products penetration to the domestic and export markets. REMARKS: Opportunities to set up a medium size manufacturing plant will enable to cater the existing food processing market./p> SUPPORT FACILITIES The government policies have been supportive towards investment in agriculture and agro-based food products. The Department of Agriculture will be in-hand to provide assistant to potential investors in areas that includes: • Leasing of semi-developed land and industrial site at a reasonable minimum rate for a mutually agreeable period. • Provision of basic infrastructures (access road , drainage, irrigation, portable water and electricity). • Application on Special Tax breaks for declared pioneer industries and products. • Assistance from the Department of Agriculture and a host of other support facilities. • The proposed agro-technology park aim to conduct scientific work and biotech innovation and commercial operation may serve as knowledge-based service provider.
