Status and Market Trends:
A relative strength in the secondary processing of the agro-based food product should be capitalized fully with the intent to penetrate the regional and international markets . Brunei Darussalam through the Department of Agriculture, Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources has been promoting the development of agro-food processing sector that includes the Premium Brunei Halal Certification to value-added poultry, livestock-based, crop-based as well as fish-based products. Under the Strategic Agriculture Development Plan 2023, Agro-Based Food Processing Sector has been identified as th e major contributing sector in the development of agribusiness. This sector is expected to contribute an estimated value of around B$1.8 billion by 2023. Though the sector is still considered in its infancy stage with much of the activities operated at cottage industry level, investments in this sector are very much welcome. So far, a small number of medium-size locally owned food companies has successfully venture in this industry, catering for the domestic market. In 2005, the primary sector production continued to dominate the agricultural industry. Livestock sector inclusive of processed products contributed to about 66%of the total market value, while crops sector contributed to the remaining 34%. Cheap raw materials for processing of agro-based food can be imported from neighbouring cou ntries.
OPPORTUNITY : (1) Poultry-based and beef products; (2) Tropical fruits and vegetables products
MARKET SETTING AND TRENDS: (1) Poultry-base and beef products: Various types of frozen poultry and meat products such as nuggets, sausages, balls, burgers, and frankfurters and other cooled poultry meat or beef are well accepted. Convenient canned foods in traditional recipes are available. (2) Tropical fruits and vegetables products: Many successful ventures are operated in small scale. Snacks, pickles and sauce are common products accepted in the market. Most of them are imported. Beverages such as sweet orange (green) juice or mixed tropical fruits juice are potential products .
REMARKS: (1) Poultry-based and beef products: There are opportunities to expand and develop new/niche products other than the existing product. Supply of raw materials is limited, but outsourcing is possible at cheap price. However, quality has to be monitored and controlled. (2) Tropical fruits and vegetables products: Potential industry sectors included bakery , sauces, snacks , pickles , beverag es and frozen foods.
SUPPORT FACILITIES
The government policies have been supportive towards investment in agriculture and agro-based food products. The Department of Agriculture will be in-hand to provide assistant to potential investors in areas that includes: • Leasing of semi-developed land and industrial site at a reasonable minimum rate for a mutually agreeable period. • Provision of basic infrastructures (access road , drainage, irrigation, portable water and electricity). • Application on Special Tax breaks for declared pioneer industries and products. • Assistance from the Department of Agriculture and a host of other support facilities. • The proposed agro-technology park aim to conduct scientific work and biotech innovation and commercial operation may serve as knowledge-based service provider.
