Historically, agriculture in Brunei Darussalam was an economic and cultural activity in the rural community. Now, the agricultural sector has shifted its direction towards developing a dynamic and market-driven agribusiness.

In this context, traditional agriculture needs to transform itself towards modernization, so that it helps to improve and develop on the basis of knowledge as well as scientific and technological innovations. In this way, the agriculture of this country could raise its production, improve its productivity and quality, as well as strengthen its competitiveness to face the challenges of globalisation and liberalisation of the regional and international markets. Hence, agriculture production should not only aim for the domestic markets, but also the regional and international markets.

It is acknowledged that the development of modern agriculture would require institutional support to raise the production capacity. In this regard, the Department of Agriculture always strives to improve the agricultural infrastructure. This is to support the development of the private sector. However, successful outcomes of these programmes are dependent on the public and private sectors working closely together. Hence, it is important for the private sector to step forward and seize the opportunities created by these development programmes. Concurrently, the existence of technological and innovation as a medium of change are important so as to uplift the level of agribusiness development in the country.

It must be stressed that the spirit of entrepreneurial is undoubtedly, very important for the on-going phases of agricultural-economic development. This is more acute, in view of the fact that science and technology are expounding at such a rapid pace, which would require the local entrepreneurs to be well equipped with the latest knowledge to fortify their entrepreneurial capacity. Therefore, local entrepreneurs are urged to raise their entrepreneurial capacity and act with vigour to venture into the various agribusinesses under the knowledge-based, new economy.
